Between Hip Hop and Jazz(LO5)
Today I am going to discuss about difference between Jazz and Hip Hop. First of all, I am going to explain what jazz music is. In the late 19th jazz music start from New Orleans by African people. This genre based from bluse and gospel song. Also it contains classical elements. We can easily can say music genre jass formed by combined between African music elements and classic elements. When it getting famous to all people, it also creates diversity jazz genres such as swing, regtime, big band, be-bob, cool jazz, free jazz, and rock jazz. It also gave affect to many other genres. Also there were many great musicians. For example, B.B king, Albert King, Freddie king. Now a days, most of people in the world know what jazz is and they enjoy it. The important elements of jazz music are blue note, dirty tones, hot – intonation, off beat, and improvisation.
Second, I will explain about hip-hop. 1973 DJ Kool Herc started something new on the turntable he extended an instrumental beat (breaking or scratching) to let people dance longer (break dancing) and began MC’ing (rapping) during the extended breakdancing. After 1980’s it spread all over the world. There are elements of hip hop snapback hats, expensive sneakers, baggy pants, beats, rhyme, and lyrics. Most famous musicians are Eminem, Dr.dre, and Tupac.
Those two musics are created by African American and the most famous music in the world, but there are many differences. The most biggest differencing is rap. Jazz does not have any rap there are only singing. Second difference is instrument. Jazz need at least three actual instruments and players. However, hip hop does not need actual instrument and players. Most instruments recovered by MIDI, so nowadays only one man can make music at home or studio by digital devices. Moreover, jazz always using natural instrument’s sound. But hip-hop usually using electronics sounds, even that is not real instrumental sound, that fine with hip-hop music. For example, hip-hop music mostly use digital drum sound not recording real drum sound from recording studio. Therefore, even one that do not know how to play instrument properly one can play any instrument by computer. Furthermore, target is different. Mostly, hip-hop music listened by young people, such as youth group and young adults. Jazz is usually older people listen then youth group.
Finally, mixing technique is different. Hip-Hop music generally boost up lower sound such as bass guitar and drum kick sound so the audience can feel full of lower sound. However, jazz is different. it does not boost lower sound. It tries to make sound more natural and clear by natural music instruments. For example, hip-hop make loud and more power for drum kick with compressor, but for jazz is different. Jazz does not have to add compression on drum kick also not to make kick sound loud as much as hip-hop.
In consequently, hip-hop and jazz are create by African American and those are very famous in the world, but there are many differences such as rap, audience target, elements of instruments, and mixing music.
