(LO 14,16,19)Comparing between my work and professional work for post production.
In the basically for the post production works are follow these steps. Recording ADR, foley and FX, music, and re-mix and finalize. Before recording post-production work, they made plan for everything about recording. They plan about schedules, budget, place, what microphone they need, ETC… From beginning of the semester, when I and my team decided our project, we have to prepare presentation to our facilitator to get approve that we can go on our project. Specially, we were keeping our schedule. For example, I finished recording ADR week 4. Also we finished recording everything before week10. Then from week 10 we start mixing. Now week 11 we are still working on mixing it will be finished by end of week 11. Moreover, as I already mentioned we considered all things about project for our plan even our target market too. We setup our target market. Our first target is our advisers for get good advice and they are already professional engineers, so if they satisfy with our project it also can be good example of my portfolio to someone looking for internship as our second target market. After setup our plan and get approve from our facilitator I keep follow general recording steps on post-production industry.
First, recording ADR(Automated Dialogue Replacement). Some people call this looping because when actors re-recording their voice, they keep watching their original performances with loop play back. After practice, most of the professional recording engineers finished record within three takes. Also, they request or suggestion actor’s pose to get right emotional voice. For my project Sherlock Holmes which is my first project for post-production. I and my team we tried to follow steps for professional industries. Therefore we start recording ADR first. It needed three actors one young, one old man, and one middle age man. We found good actors. When first we record ADR, we stopped recording on that week because we could not bring out actor’s emotion. We recorded young man first then we tried record candle man. However, we tried to found actor who has fit voice. Finally, we found him name of James. While we tried to find new actor, I was try to solve communication with actors. I thought my first recording quality was bad is I could not communicate well with actor. I had meeting with my facilitators about efficient communication with actors. They gave me some advices, than I try those skills. Fortunately, my communication skill getting batter then I could finish recording all ADR. One more recording skill is take only three takes. I tries that on my session, but I cloud not make that. I was selected secession including ADR part and loop
recording because we were not a professional actors and engineer, so I decided get sources as much as I can then I got around fifty sources. After recording our team had really hard to times to choose a good dialogue. Also, we made mistake with microphone technique because all ADR should record with omni-directional but we recorded ADR with Cardioid direction. Therefore, we had to re-record ADR again. However, I have learned many things through this opportunity.
Second, recording foley and FX. The most hard to recoding on our project was footsteps. After recording all footsteps on my project why people call foley engineers to foley walker or stepper. Also even one step of footstep I had to show emotion. For recording footsteps on soil I and my team member Geinstin were spend many hours outside of studio. Also, we spent many days to find right materials to make fit sound with scene. There are some good suggestions for foley recording such as heavy stapler can make good gun-noise. Rollup phone book is good for body punch. We were focusing on detail of sound. However, we were trying to record frog sound with an old traditional Thai toy. Before recording it we thought that was good, but when we recorded it was not natural sound. Finally, we choose background sound from sound library. For foley and FX we were try to record all for our project, even we record ambience. At least we recorded 95% of sound recorded of all sound. On the other hand, there is scene for inside mountain, we cannot record ambience sound and original video clip included frog sound, we were trying to record frog sound through Thai traditional toy. It makes frog sound, but when we recorded that toy’s sound it does not sound right. Therefore, we decided to use sound source from sound library.
Finally, compose back ground music. From the beginning we divided our job for this project. I take a part of all ADR, Geinstin take foley and FX, and Shreya take BGM. While, I and Geinstin working for ADR, foley, and FX Shreya helped us and also, I and Geinstin help her too. We looked for all back ground music of Sherlock movies and TV dramas. We chose several song and decided fit music with scene. Total we chose three song and she start work with recording instrument and MIDI by Lgic Pro. For back ground music, basically it is copy songs but we re-creating by our own midi skills and recording
In consequently, through this semester’s project was very hard for us, but we learned many things about post-production. I think this chance is good to chance to develop our skills for pose-production. For the future it will help to put my portfolio and then I can show my projects to show to someone who looking for internship also I can show our skill to our facilitators in the school to make them inspire with our skills. Moreover, through this experience recording post production and composeing music. Those skills that I learned many things from recording ADR to using MIDI. Therefore, for next semester I will can have more idea and make better songs and video clip sound recording.
